Description
Colt's patent for the revolving pistol cylinder expired in 1857, opening the door for competitors such as the Whitney Arms Company of New Haven, Connecticut. The Whitney Navy pistol was one of the first solid frame revolvers, and over 33,000 were produced from the late 1850s to the mid 1860s, with most purchased by the Union during the Civil War. Whitney Navy revolvers of the "War Between the States" have been of great interest to collectors for decades, leading Daniel E. Williams, Jr. to write an authoritative reference book on the subject in 2012. This "WHITNEY NAVY REVOLVER" UNION CONFEDERATE US CIVIL WAR PISTOL GUN REFERENCE BOOK is in near mint, unread condition, with only some light scattered storage wear evident (most pictured). Otherwise, the book is in near mint shape, with no other damage. Most interestingly, it boasts an elegantly illustrated dust jacket over hardcovers, and sports 105 pages full of descriptive text, period pictures, and color photographs of the history and development of the Whitney Arms Company's Navy revolver, the differences between 1st and 2nd Model revolvers, and the variations within those types, wonderful details regarding construction, barrel markings, cylinder scenes, hardware, grips, and serial numbers, US government contracted "martial" Whitneys and their inspection stamps, Confederate purchased/used Whitneys, including the one carried by famed Southern Cavalry General JEB Stuart, the Whitney's influence on Confederate made revolvers such as the Spiller & Burr and Cofer models, engraved and presentation Whitneys, and a plethora of other invaluable information.
