    Description

The Confederacy was short of everything except courage in the Civil War, and to outfit her troops daring blockade runners brought in British arms and equipment in exchange for gold and cotton. Besides all of the Enfields, revolvers, swords, cutlasses, and bayonets destined for the Confederacy, thousands of single and double barrel shotguns were imported from England by Southern merchants before the war and speculators during the conflict. In addition to those imported "scatterguns", thousands more were acquired by Southern state officials from the local populace to arm volunteer units early in the "War between the States". Confederate shotguns have been of great interest to collectors for decades, leading Russ A. Pritchard, Jr. and John W. Ashworth, Jr. to write an authoritative reference book on the subject in 2017. This "CONFEDERATE & SOUTHERN AGENT MARKED SHOTGUNS" CSA CIVIL WAR GUN REFERENCE BOOK is in excellent, unread condition, with only some light scattered storage wear evident (most pictured). Otherwise, the book is in excellent shape, with no other damage. Most interestingly, it boasts elegantly illustrated hardcovers, and sports 377 pages full of descriptive text, period pictures, and color photographs of Confederate shotguns retailed by F.H. Clark & Company of Memphis, TN, T.W. Tignor of Richmond, VA, D. Kernaghan & Company of New Orleans, LA, E.H. Rogers of Augusta, GA, J.H. Happoldt of Charleston, SC, Franz J. Bitterlich of Nashville, TN, and many others, those adapted for sword bayonets by Cook & Brother of New Orleans, more fitted with bayonet lugs, plenty of Southern "scatterguns" modified with shortened barrels, musket size percussion nipples, sling swivels, or "saddle" rings, great details on London, Birmingham, Liege, and Suhl proof marks, tons of battlefield pickups with capture histories, wonderful information on English shotgun makers, Southern shotgun retailers, and Confederate state efforts to acquire shotguns from their citizenry at the outbreak of the war, great sections on Confederate brass handled shotgun sword bayonets, Southern Arsenal manufactured and packed shotgun cartridges, images of "Johnny Rebs" with shotguns, revolvers, and bowie knives, and a plethora of other invaluable information. A beautiful example of a "CONFEDERATE & SOUTHERN AGENT MARKED SHOTGUNS" CSA CIVIL WAR GUN REFERENCE BOOK. Now celebrating over 20 years on eBay.
