Vitrolite sea glass washes up on Scottish shores in a rainbow of opaque colors, but rarest is transparent purple. Vitrolite is the trademarked name of a structural glass variety pioneered in 1900 by the Marrietta Manufacturing Company in Indianapolis, Indiana. This type of glass gained significant popularity during the first half of the 20th century and found extensive use as tiles for walls and ceilings. The production process involves fusing borax, cryolite, kaolinite, manganese, silica, feldspar, and fluorspar at an extreme temperature of 3,000 °F (1,650 °C), followed by annealing for a period of three to five days.
