    Description

    Greetings From Conglomeration Of Miscellany!!
Are you looking to add some electronic percussion to your next hit, and want to create it on a retro drum pad from the 1980s? This may be the solution you are looking for, the Roland OctaPad II Pad 80 MIDI Pad Controller. This controller was owned by my late Father-In-Law. He purchased it in August of 1988. It only saw use in a home environment, and was not used in performances. He was a computer hobbyist and digital music enthusiast, and taught himself how to set up and operate various MIDI devices all interfaced through an Apple IIgs computer.
The Roland OctaPad II is a MIDI drum controller. The unit plays samples stored on remote sources connected to it through a MIDI interface. It has the capability of playing three notes per pad, increasing creative possibilities. 64 patches can be stored internally, with an additional 64 patches possible when using memory cards. It also has a patch chain function which allows up to 32 patches to be arranged in any sequence desired. In terms of physical expandability, 6 additional individual drum pads can be attached to the OctaPad II and mapped to the source computer. This allows access to more pads while allowing more personalized instrument layouts.
This unit is all original. The drum pads themselves have been played, but are not worn out. In fact they are still have partial factory shine. The rubber pads and gaskets are still pliable, (nothing is dried out and hard). The trigger sensors have been verified to work on all 8 pads as evidenced by the response of the LED velocity meter. The LCD display has a working contrast control to adjust for different lighting situations, and the green backlight makes the display easy to read even in bright conditions. The rubberized membrane control buttons are also soft, pliable, and have no printed wording worn off. The membrane under them is extremely resilient (no sticking buttons). All ports on the rear of the unit have been gently air dusted and swabbed for dust and dirt. The finish on the casing has some very light scratches on the lower half of the body which are almost unnoticeable. Because the unit spent its life on a mount, the bottom of the case is in wonderful condition with no scrapes or scratches. The rubber feet are like new. The power supply has its transformer between the cord ends. It is functional and in perfect working order. There is approximately 12' of cable total. Both sections have been inspected for breaks in the wire insulation, and are solid from end to end with clean, shiny plugs. All documentation, including the user manual, quick reference guide, MIDI reference, and supplemental request for literature pamphlet are in like new condition in their original plastic shipping bag.
Also included in this purchase are non-Roland accessories that were purchased new for this drum pad. These include two weighted Korg PS-1 switch pedals, two Valhala M-256D memory cards, Zildjian Anti Vibe size 5B drumsticks, and a Remo Dynamax drum stand which includes the Roland drum stand mount.
The Korg PS-1 pedals are in almost like-new condition, and very well made. These are completely made of metal and have heavy rubber foot pads and feet to maintain their position on the floor. These were purchased to externally control the patch switch function, allowing sound sets to be changed on the fly. They use 1/4" monaural connectors to attach to the drum pad, and have approximately 8' of high quality cord with soft, pliable rubber insulation that has no kinks, knots, cuts or breaks.
NOTE: These would also work as an external foot pedal drum patch, (although the volume of the drum sound could not be varied).
Also included are two Valhala M-256D memory cards to save and load patch data. These cards have been tested through formatting and recognized by the OctaPad. They include plastic sleeves for storage when not inserted in the drum pad.
NOTE: These cards have a CR2016 lithium backup battery. Though not shown, new batteries will be included. They will need to be installed by the new owner. There is a small trickle current that slowly drains them when installed, and no power from the OctaPad is present. This could potential drain the new batteries before the unit is received by the new owner. When this happens, the card cannot retain the formatting or information stored to it, and the OctaPad will repeatedly ask to initialize the memory card.
New Zildjian Anti Vibe size 5B drumsticks are also being included, as the original sticks could not be located.
The Remo Dynamax drum stand has double-bracketed legs for extra stability complimented by large rubber feet. When folded, it is approximately 30" off the ground from feet to pad mount. All adjustment turn screws have been checked. They move freely and have no stripped or crossed threading. The finish was gently polished to a mirror shine.
NOTE: The Roland mount attaches to the bottom of the Pad-80 with 4 long screws. To ensure safe shipping, this mount was removed and the mounting screws were reinstalled. The mounting bracket was then secured to the drum stand. This will need to be reattached before using the drum stand with the OctaPad.
It should also be noted that, in addition to the official user documentation supplied by Roland, my Father-In-Law's handwritten notes on this device will be included to give insight as to how he configured it. These notes may be useful to both a professional or beginner. This drum pad is meant to be used in combination with a computer that stores the sounds that it plays, interfacing with it through MIDI software and MIDI cabling. It was not designed with a line audio output for headphones or speakers. It will require a computer, MIDI software and MIDI cabling to and from a computer to work. The computer will then need to output the sound to an amplifier or mixer board to be heard. In order to properly use this unit, a familiarity with these principles is needed. Just like any other instrument, time, practice, and patience are needed to discover the full potential of this drum controller.
