Description
US Civil War Model 1852 Navy Officers Sword. The ricasso is marked with a "B"? with a crown over it and a "S" in a shield, on the underside of the guard by the quillion there is also an "E.L." with 3 stars over it, this represents E. Lyon, all these marks are of French manufacture, most likely Klingenthal. The sharkskin grip is 95% complete, heaviest wear is at the seam. The twisted wire wrap is 100% complete and slightly loose. The guard does move a bit if you force it. The pommel cap is missing.
The etched blade
has a very dark patina with some light surface rust making the etchings on one side harder to see but overall you can still see an anchor, stars, a U.S.N. flag, a faint U.S.N. banner, rope with acorns and leaves, and other etched designs, it
is straight, unsharpened, the tip is sharp, and the last 4" has some light nicks and pitting.
The leather scabbard has some light crazing, the stitching is mostly tight (only let go just below the throat piece and where the drag should be), the drag is missing, the throat piece is loose, this looks like it was a left handed scabbard because the seam is on the wrong side and the mounts have been turned around and back again, leaving screw drag lines on both sides from the middle mount
.
W
asher is missing. Length of the blade is 29" (1 1/8" wide and 5/16" thick), the sword is 34 1/8" and overall in the scabbard it is also 34 1/8" because of the missing drag.
