Here is a rather scarce Civil War sword. At the beginning of the war New Jersey decide to stock up on weapons and uniforms. They the started buying items to stock pile . This sword is one of those swords. It is an Ames model 1840 NCO Sword. The hilt is brass of regulation pattern. The knucklebow is stamped "AHC " for either of these inspectors , Archibald H Ceiley 1862 to 1863, or A.H. Clark 1859 to 1879. The sword dates to 1862 . the obverse ricasso is stamped " NJ " for New Jersey. the reverse ricasso has Ames maker stamp very clear. The straight single-edged blade has some age staining but is in fine antique condition.No Scabbard . The overall length is 38 1/2 with a 32" blade.
