SCARCE CIVIL WAR PERIOD GERMAN HUNTING SWORD WEYERSBERG SOLINGEN TURNVEREIN CLUB
Description
Presented for your consideration is this fine specimen of a German hunting sword dating from the mid-19th century. This sword is in untouched, uncleaned, as-found condition with a great patina. This sword measures 26 inches in length with a blade length of 20 3/4 inches. The obverse ricasso is marked "GEBRUDER WEYERSBERG" and the reverse ricasso is marked "SOLINGEN." This sword was discovered in southern Ohio and I have no doubt that it was used by a Turnverein or "Turner" society during the Civil War period. The Turnverein Movement describes the popularity and proliferation of German-American societies and social clubs whose main pursuits were athletic competition, military drill, and marksmanship. One might describe some of them as a quasi-militia of sorts, but they were more oriented on fostering unity among German emigres in the 19th century. Quite naturally, several Ohio regiments composed largely of German emigres were recruited from Turnverein societies. They brought with them the iconography, slogans, and in some cases, weaponry from their "Turner" clubs. Without going into an exhaustive history, if you know what I am talking about already, well, you know what I am talking about and where this is headed. Compare and contrast the well-known "Bahn Frei" or "Turner bayonets" to this hunting sword and the linkage is quite obvious. There is a distinct possibility that this sword saw field service during the early years of the war with an Ohio regiment. The overall condition is superb and untouched. There are only a couple of very tiny nicks in the blade edge that are barely noticeable. The cast brass hilt is firmly affixed and the horn handle scales are held in place with three large domed rivets of brass. The handle scales are of horn and exhibit only minor shrinkage and two small worm holes. The patina on the brass is of a very pleasing and desirable mustard hue. This sword would complement any collection of German-themed Civil War material or "Turner" artifacts. Scarce material here from Brother Rabbit's hutch!
