    Description

This silver plated Victorian pitcher features highly stylized floral motifs that seamlessly bend styles from across the centuries and across the continents. It is a perfect example of what is called Victorian eclecticism.
This kind of silverplate vessle was named "hollowear" by its inventor, James Stimpson, a noted Baltimore inventor. He first received the U.S. patent for a multi-walled ice pitcher on October 17th, 1854. StThis kind of silver plate vessle was named "hollowear" by its inventor, James Stimpson, a noted Baltimore inventor. He first received the U.S. patent for a multi-walled ice pitcher on October 17th, 1854. Stimpsons design was the precursor to the modern thermos or Dewar flask, having a double sided and double bottom configuration, thus keeping the ice water inside insulated. This kept the contents colder longer and minimized condensation in the pre-air-conditioned Victorian household. Ice would last three times as long in the Stimpson design as it would in common pitchers of the times.
