Description
RARE CIVIL WAR AMES 1860 STAFF & FIELD OFFICER'S SWORD W/ SCABBARD ETCHED BLADEA scarce Civil War manufactured US 1860 Staff & Field Officer’s Sword with the RARE OVAL BLADE, manufactured by Ames Mfg. Co., Chicopee, Mass. It is a very handsome sword with hilt mounts and a fine rayskin grip with twisted wire wrap. The reverse guard is plain, as if often the case with these early swords. The blade is beautifully etched, fairly wide, and oval in cross section. The etching is very strong, and includes an American Eagle with a Union Shield on his breast, trophies of arms with a Union shield, and a ribbon with “E Pluribus Unum.” The scabbard is chromed with bronze mounts.
Dimensions: 37.5 inches long overall, with a 29.75 inch blade.
Condition:
The sword is in excellent condition, although the button that holds the spring on the reverse folding guard is missing. There are a few MINOR nicks on blade edge. The scabbard has a bend/dent below the middle mount. The chrome on the scabbard is flaking/rubbed off in a spots throughout. Grips seems solid to sword, but the C guard does wiggle around.
