A Very Rare And Unique Civil War Period American Made Scottish Style Baskethilt Broadsword By Horstman Likely Made For An Officer In The Cameron Highlanders 79th New York Volunteers (1859-1876) In Its Original Scabbard, 31 and 5/8th inch diamond shape double edged blade.
1 and 1/4 inch wide at forte. The blade etched for half its length with trophies of arms, scrolling foliage, Scottish thistles, and “Horstman and Sons Philadelphia” and stamped with a “King’s Head” mark.
The blade is in fine condition and has 100% of the etching. The blade has been nickel plated throughout. The basket of traditional Scottish form with thistles and S’s making up the guard. Faceted squash type pommel is nickel plated en suite with blade and guard. Leather covered wood grip bound with two strand twisted copper wire. Guard retains its period wool Scotch plaid hand protector in very good condition.
Leather scabbard is ‘alligatored’ but generally sound. Chape, locket and middle mount retain 40 to 90% original nickel. 39 inches overall.
The 79th served with distinction in the Civil War having 3 officers killed in action and 116 enlisted men killed or wounded. A very interesting and most unusual Civil War Scottish broadsword.
