Description
Pre-Civil War NCO Staff & Field Swordwith Leather Scabbard.
There are no markings anywhere. The NCO style brass guard, pommel, and grip are tight. The brass cast grip has an almost vine like design on it with a twisted wire design too. The clamshell (very slightly bent) has
the eagle with flags on it like on a Model 1860 Staff & Field sword and the mini back clamshell has what looks like a sunburst with scroll designs.
The double fullered blade appears faintly blued, it
is straight except for the last 1/16" of the tip, unsharpened, I can feel small nicks along the edges but don't see them,
it has some small minor spots of pitting here and there, also a tiny bit of surface rust.
The leather scabbard is solid, the stitching is mostly tight, a few small spots of leather loss, it is missing the drag, the throat piece was reattached at some point, it is backwards and upside down.
W
asher is missing. Length of the blade is 31 7/8" (7/8" wide and 1/8" thick), the sword alone and overall in the scabbard is 37 7/8" because the drag is missing.
This is an odd combo sword that I could not find in any research book or on the internet, very likely a rare piece. Could be US made but probably French or German for the US market, I see a little influence from each place.
