S165T, Brass handle mounted on a US Naval Dahlgren (Whitneyville Plymouth rifle) bayonet blade. An exciting adaptation obviously popular, as other similar specimens have been observed. This specimen of the genre may have been Confederate created, as the eagle on the pommel has been mostly filed and worn off. The formally incised letters in the cross guard USS have been lined out, the rebels were very partial to their larger knives, mostly those bid D guard bowie's that were blacksmith homemade and there is a 5 pointed star of Texas fixed to the top of the pommel. Although quite heavy, the same was true of the Dahlgren musket bayonet and the artillery short sword. Steel blade markings are too badly pitted to read, overall length 18". Quite sound, the assembler used melted lead to fasten the blade in the handle. All original, ship weight is 4 pounds.
