    Description

S177N, Circa 1850-60's. Civil War militia issue (young officers had to pay for their own equipment), the cheapest thing that a poor 2nd Lieutenant could afford, during his first year, or two of training/service. Not a fraternal sword, but many of these were manufactured by the same companies who made fraternal swords. Note the absence of any markings, little embellishment anywhere. Retains some gold plating on the brass parts. The fine condition leather scabbard is lacquered in red, indicating an artillery officer in the state militia. Many of these went into the Civil War with their owners. Finely carved cow bovine bone grip and finely made brass helmet pommel. Finely made 28" diamond cross section, tapered steel blade, rigid and of best workmanship. Finely nickle plated. A very standard type, meeting the military requirements and dimensions adopted since the War of 1812. Overall length sheathed is 36.5". Very good used condition, a real weapon, not just an ornament. All original and complete, ship weight is 5 pounds.
