    Description

Up for auction is a fascinating and rare genuine English Thames foreshore find - a pottery face shard from an antique Bartmann stoneware jug (also called a Bellarmine jug). This Thames foreshore find is a nearly complete bearded face from the neck of an antique Bartmann stoneware jug. This type of decorated salt-glazed stoneware was manufactured in Europe throughout the 16th and 17th centuries - they were used to store and transport food and drink and to decant wine. The signature decorative detail of these jugs was a bearded face appearing on the lower neck of the vessel - photograph #6 shows examples of two different jugs. This extra large/XXL shard is curved as it came from the neck of an antique stoneware jug; it has nicely worn edges from its time in the Thames. This is a fascinating, rare, collectible antique Bartmann stoneware jug pottery face shard found on the Thames foreshore in England!
A dime has been included in some photographs for size comparison: ***please use photographs #2-4 to judge size***. The photographs were taken outdoors in natural light - if you would like additional photographs, please do not hesitate to ask. Please use all of the photographs to evaluate condition and determine if this antique Bartmann stoneware jug pottery face shard found on the Thames foreshore in England will meet your needs.
