Description
Pre Civil War imported French Briquette short sword. These swords were imported by the south early in the war.An example can be seen in Francis Lord's Encyclopedia of Civil War relics. It's shown with a group of Confederate weapons that were captured and put on display at the 1864 Worlds Fair in New York. From what I was told , this was dug many years ago somewhere near Sandston,Va,Surprisingly it's all there ,although the blade is corroded and rusted away in a few areas. A preservative of some sort was used on the blade to save it from further deterioration. It's quite solid and stable.
The front of the guard is marked stamped 19 and on the opposite of the guard , it's marked III
There is a tiny single star on the front side . On the knuckle guard, there are 11 tiny stars. These would have been stamped by the soldier as
these were never manufactured in the south. They were French imports.
