This is a Tiffany M1850 Foot Officers sword presented to an officer from the 162nd infantry regiment. The presentation reads:
    Presented to

    by his
    Friends & Relatives

    th
    1862
Lieutenant William O. Flock was a member K Company, 162nd NewYork Infantry when the unit left New York for Washington, D, C., October 24, 1862 and moved to New Orleans, Louisiana in November where the command had duty at Carrollton, Louisiana, until March 1863; Plaquemine December 31, 1862, and January 3, 1863. He was still with the command when it moved to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, March 7 in preparation for operations against Port Hudson; However, he went missing and was subsequently court martialed and dismissed on 6 April, 1863.
The reason for his absence is unknown. The sword is marked Tiffany Co. New York; has a 32 inch etched blade, which has a grayish patina. The hilt has a deep reddish patina with a raised button on the pommel cap flower, and is tight with a grip complete with 100% original leather and wire. The scabbard is complete with all original mounts with the presentation on the throat mount. Also, there is a unique period repair below the middle mount; a leather wrap with two brass rivets.
Though Lieutenant Flock’s time in service was short, he was presented with a high-end sword that shows it was carried and saw some action before his dismissal.
