    Description

US Civil War Model 1840 Militia NCO Sword.
The ricasso is marked "Horstmann" over "Philadelphia" and on the reverse is a Knights head stamp which stands for C.R. Kirschbaum. There are no other markings
    .
The brass guard and grip both have a wiggle. The knuckle guard is a bit deformed. The clamshell has a slight bend.
    The blade
is etched with floral designs, it is unsharpened but the tip is sharp, there are age spots throughout with pitting, some light surface rust on the last 3 1/2" by the tip, and the blade does have a slight bend.
    W
asher is missing. Length of the blade is 31 1/8" (5/8" wide and 3/16" thick) and overall the sword is 37 5/8".
The only other place that I've seen one of these is in the book "American Swords from the Philip Medicus Collection"
    (page 38, item 15g).
