Description
Civil War Era Italian Model 1860 Heavy Cavalry Officers Sword with Scabbard. The ricasso is marked "S & K" which stands for Schnitzler & Kirshbaum, sword maker of Solingen, Germany and they also had a location in London, the reverse side has what looks like "CI" or "OI" under a crown. The guard and grip are tight, missing about 10% of the leather, butthe twisted wire wrap is complete
. The heavy blade is straight, no nicks, it has been sharpened (it is very sharp and looks machine done), lightly oiled and looks clean. The scabbard is solid with a darkened patina and some very light surface rust by the drag which is marked "A & E. H." for A+E Holler also of Solingen. The felt washer is intact. Length of the blade is 35 1/4" (1 5/16" wide and 3/8" thick), the sword is 41 1/2", and in the scabbard it is 42 5/8".
Schnitzler & Kirshbaum made swords as early as 1811 and up to 1864. S&K was the first official US contract for military sabers starting in 1840.
There is no proof that these were or weren't imported for the US Civil War but it was made during the Civil War Era!
