    This is a scarce and very desirable example of a
    Confederate 3RDModel Virginia Manufactory Artillery Saber with a flatter blade than the 2nd model.. The blade has been shortened to 34 3/4 inches by the state of Virginia for the Civil War.

    The 22nd Virginia Infantry Regiment was organized in western Virginia in April of 1861 and was disbanded at at Christianburg, Virginia in April of 1865. For much of its history it was commanded by George S. Patton, grandfather of the World War II general.

    Organized for state service under the command of Colonel Christopher Q. Tompkins.
    July 1
    The regiment was transferred to Confederate Service. Captain George S. Patton (VMI Class of 1852) of Company H was promoted to lieutenant colonel.

    Lieutenant Colonel Patton was wounded and about a dozen other men were killed or wounded.
