Here is afantastic original Confederate Bowie Knife from one of the most respectedcollections of our time. This knife spent the last several years in thepersonal collection of Lewis Leigh of Virginia. His collection matched many ofthe finest museums in the country. This one is a Southern made Bowie knife thatis known to collectors as the Pistol Grip. It is because of the shape of thehandle is distinctive from the other knives of the day. This one is verysimilar to the one illustrated in the Bowie knife armed soldier photographsection of the Confederate Bowie Knife book by Sexton, Melton and Phillips. Onpage 265 it shows the young Rebel with his knife on his side. This massiveknife measures 19-1/2 inches in overall size with the blade making up 14-1/2inches. The blade has the clip point design with the finely crafted false edgeon top. The original iron cross guard is intact with a pleasing look. The handleof the knife uses a brass piece for the ferrule which is the piece on the gripclosest to the cross guard. It also has the brass cap that is screwed onto thedark wood handle. The handle is original with a old repair to the wood. Theknife is accompanied by the original brown leather scabbard with the gorgeousancient untouched color that has aged to a reddish color. It has the simple yetattractive tool work line around the edge. On the back of the scabbard it hasthe original stitching going down the center of the leather. This is awonderful piece that just screams Dixie from a historic collection.
