    Description

US Civil War Model 1840 NCO Sword.
The ricasso is marked with an arched "Collins & Co", over a straight "Hartford" over "Conn" and on the reverse "1861". There are no other markings
    .
The brass guard is tight but the grip will move a tiny bit. The knuckle guard and clamshells have some small nicks and scratches.
    The blade
is straight, unsharpened, the tip feels sharp but appears blunted, a few very minor nicks along the edge, there are age spots throughout and the lower third has some pitting with light surface rust.
    W
asher is missing. Length of the blade is 31 1/2" (7/8" wide and 5/16" thick) and overall the sword is 38".
1 of only 648 pieces (most dated 1862).
Thillmanns' Civil War Army Swords book (pages 202+203) states the separately dated
Collins & Co NCO swords are
believed to be the very rare U.S. Government purchased NCO swords.
    O
nes dated 1861 are considered extremely scarce and
    with arched company name
(typically found on the 1862 dated swords), makes this even more rare!
