Description
Very nice British P1821 Light Cavalry Sabre. Sturdy hilt has ray or sharkskin grip that is 99% complete as are the original twisted wires. Traces of silvering remain in recessed areas of the hilt. Very tight with absolutely no wiggle or movement.Blade is bright with moderate speckling throughout. Stamped "MOLE" which is often associated with Southern imports in the 1860s. Likely a Confederate used sword during the Civil War. No other marks on the blade. There are a few shallow nicks in the blade as shown in the pic.
Scabbard is leather covering a wood insert. I've only seen steel scabbards for these, but except for being just a quarter inch short of seating (likely due to shrinkage of the leather), it fits the blade perfectly and has probably been with the sword during its working life. The scabbard leather has a crack about a quarter of the way from the bottom and stitching is loose in this area too. However, the scabbard remains solid and doesn't "flop around," but you should obviously still be careful with it. Two carry rings.
A very ergonomic and attractive sword. Measures 39 1/4 inches overall when seated in the scabbard. Blade measures 32 1/2 inches long.
